She & Him, Me and You

Another Project.

The lovely Zooey Deschanel and M Ward are She & Him. A low-key indie folk band. The song "Me and You" is from their second album entitled Volume Two.

This week will be a short week since I'm going to Stockholm on Thursday. And I'm not going for any old reason. My brother is getting married and I'm the best man. Finally a worthy title. So just to make sure that this week isn't without music, the song of the week is a bit early.

Anyone who has seen a movie with Zooey Deschanel knows that she likes to sing. She has managed to sing a song in almost every single movie she has been in. So it's not to surprising to find out that she is now releasing a second full length album with her band She & Him.

Simply a nice song.

Adidas Grün, Nizza Hi

Ya Man!

Nizza Hi, one of Adidas thinner sneakers. A good alternative to any converse sneak. Perfect for the warmer times.

Not only is it a nice sneak, it's also apart of Adidas Grün collection. Which is suppose to mean that this sneaker is made under the best environmental circumstances. That the material used and the way it's been made doesn't waste too much of this planet.

I have no idea if that's true or not. I mean, is there anyone actually checking up on how this sneaker has been made? There should be.

Anyway, if it's something you might want to own and you can't find it in stores then just click yourself over to Six Feet Down.

Long Nights, Short Days.

Be The Weekend!

There are places where you can walk in on Friday and walk home in the afternoon on Sunday. The nights easily get longer than the days.

This is a part of the city. A part of the city that brings in money. It's a blessing and a curse. People hear of the night life that is offered and travel a long way to get it. Asking the question - Why did you move to Berlin? more often than you think you get the answer - You know! It's Berlin.

It's hard to explain in words, you really need to see the person that answers the question. Because when they give that answer they normal give a very casual nod of the head and a little roll of the eyes. Their body language basically says - "Hey man! You know why I moved here. It's cheap, there is a lot of clubs and it's okay here to have a shitty job just to be able to party". It takes a while before you can read the signs but believe me, that's what they mean.

Even though you can find a party any day of the week, for the most of us the weekend is when we can go out and take part in the fun. This weekend check out Raum 18, Horstopian in Horst, Wir Kinder vom Schlesischen Tor, Fuck me now and love me later in Arena Club or why not Suicide Cirus or Ritter Butzke. Either way, if thing's go as they often do, we will all meet up in Golden Gate sooner or later.

Be the Weekend! It only comes around once a week.

Spring Tee?

Cleptomanicx.

The most important piece of clothing when the temperature gets a bit higher is of course the T-shirt. Here's one from Cleptomanicx.

This Hamburger brand (the city Hamburg, not the food) is somewhat of a mixed brand. You could say that they are a skate brand that get their influences from the see. Maybe not the see, but the beach and the general vibe you get from being close to the ocean.

The ongoing theme is pastel colors and light designs. That's why you can easily say that their t-shirts go very well in spring and summer. They just have that easy feeling about them. I especially like the clean designs when they just use their logo and name.

Audio Bullys, The Future Belongs To Us

Round 3.

Third album dropped end of last month. With "Higher Than the Eiffel" the Audio Bully's are back. Are they still the same?

The last thing I heard from the Audio Bully's was their remix of Nancy Sinatra's Shot You Down. And that was back in -05. So what have they been doing all these years. One could have thought that they were sitting in some basement doing even better songs. That doesn't seem to be the case. They might have been in a basement but what they came out with is not as good as it once was.

The Future Belongs To Us is a good track, it's clearly an Audio Bully's track. It has all the ingredient that made the band big. But something is missing. What's missing is that little extra, that bit that just grabs you and make you move.

Good but could be better.

Lakai Telford Welsh Newport

Blast From The Past.

When you can't find anything new, you can always take a look back. From 2006 we have the "Newport".

Lakai, the maker of this sneaker, is a straight up Skate Shoe company. It was started by two pro-skaters back in 1999. And as a skate-shoe maker most of their sneakers don't make it out of the skate shops. But in 2006 this Telford with it's Newport color design made it big.

It's not hard to understand. The model it self resembles a Nike basketball model and the color design is nothing else than fresh. Fresh in the sense that the turquoise works very nicely with the white. A really clean summer sneak that I wish would be manufactured again.

I hope you all had a nice Easter weekend. I had, even though I got a cold.

Easter Just Got A lot Better.

Finally!

Easter doesn't have to be a calm and boring holiday. It can also be four days and nights of what ever you want.

I don't know if you agree with me but Easter is one of does holidays you just "have to" spend with you family. With tag-lines like, "We don't see each other that often" and "It's gonna be cosy". Don't get me wrong, I love my family. It's celebrating a holiday that's all about some bunny and some guy dying that's the problem. That and everything is closed and it's only crap on TV. It's might be cosy for an hour or two but you will most likely end up in front of the TV. And is that really what you want to do with your free time?

I don't. I want to drink, dance, laugh, see new thinks, fuck, experiment and in general just have a good time. So I thank, well myself, for living in the perfect place to do just that. Berlin Baby!

And looking at the share number of parties this weekend I can't be the only one feeling the same about Easter. Here are just some of the parties taking place in the city. Delikat is having Möbelrücken in Mädcheninternat with a bonfire in the court yard. Normal a lot of dancing and lots of cute girls.

Kleine Reise could be fun, seems like it will be a lot of jokes taking place. Hope not to practical. Either way Kleine Reise is a smaller club that has a nice atmosphere. Worth a visit. On Friday Tacheles is having drum n bass (for the ones that likes that sort of thing) with Klanggut. And Saturday Ritter Butzke is doing Life of Butzke which has very long and interesting line up. Would not surprise me if it's full and no one gets in after 2.

With that said I wish each and every one of you a Happy Easter. Do what the fuck you want and it's all gonna be good. See you on Tuesday when normal life starts once more.

The Go Find, New Indie

Everybody Knows It's Gonna Happen Only Not Tonight.

Third album from the The Go Find. Which is the Belgian Dieter Sermeus's band project.

What started as a one man band slowly turned into a five man band. But in a sense this is Dieter Sermues's thing. It's somewhat feel-good indie with some electronica in there. Might call it indietronica, but I was never good at sub-genres so let's just stick with indie.

And I have to say, I really like the CD-cover.

The Perfect Setup.

Keep them Coming!

Yanko design brings us yet another simple idea that you wish you came up with.

More and more people are getting laptops instead of stationary computers. We all want to be flexible and mobile. Or at least have the possibility to be. And with everything mobile it's better when it's small. Smaller laptops and notebook means less usb ports. This idea could solve that problem.

Skytop 2 TUF

To the Sky.

Supra Skytop 2 TUF, a classic now in all white. Supra's "TUF" material on the outside for protection and a leather inside for comfort.

Not long ago I wrote about the Skytop, this is the second version of that sneak. This just like the first version is a skate shoe. The Skytop is what they call a signature model, (from one of the skater greats,) Chad Muska. So not only does it look good it's also suppose to have excellent impact resistance. And being a TUF model, this sneak should be able to handle the harder stuff.

Clean sneaker that will survive more than you think. Get it at a supra dealer or by clicking here on caliroots.com

Sky over Berlin.

Suntastic.

The Berlin sunrise on a Saturday or Sunday. Best seen walking out of a club.

Standing on a dance floor in the 13Th floor watching the sun come up is something you can't really do in all cities. It's a special feeling walking out of a club and seeing the sun go up, hearing the birds sing. And then walking to another club.

But enough about last weekend. There is a new weekend in front of us and spring has already gotten some people dancing. For example, now as I'm writing this a party has started in Volkspark Friedrichshain. Because of a birthday and the nice weather a mobile sound system will be brought out for this years first open air. All you need to do is, bring what you need and you can start dancing right now.

Not all of us can get away right now. So tonight might be better. Wilde Renate has Renates Heimkinder with everything that means, Ritter Butzke is doing Disco and House tonight and HBC has You are Invited which seems to have a bit of everything from the art world.

And as for tomorrow I would make some advertisement for Raum 18, just because it's the only club in deepest Neukölln. That and Sirius part IV looks very interesting.

Have a nice weekend and I will see you soon.

Shorts

Short Pants.

Without being to optimistic, I would say that spring has arrived to Berlin. Taking for granted that the weather stays like this, it's now time to start looking for shorts.

If you are in Berlin at the moment you can really feel that we have arrived. We made it. We have survived the harsh winter and spring is upon us. Just by standing in the sun a couple of minutes gets me thinking. What shorts should I get?

There are a couple of things to keep in mind when it comes to this. First (like always) it's a money question. How much do you have at your disposal. And then it's the obvious, how warm will it be and for how long. Lets say it stays warm for 3 months. and half of that rains away. That's still one and a half month of short wearing days. Which means that you're gonna need more than one pair. I mean you don't run around in the same pair of pants all winter, so why would it be different for shorts. At least five pairs would be ideal. But if you buy high-end stuff at 110-120€ a pop that is gonna be some money. Even if you get these clean Carhartt "Master Bermuda" shorts it still gonna run you 60-80€.

So going and getting shorts at H&M or any other store in that price range is a good idea. But if you still want to get just one or two pairs that are a bit more expensive, then just make sure that they are somewhat neutral. You don't want your one pair to be to recognizable.

APC, Adidas Original, The Hundreds and Cheap Monday all have nice shorts in their Spring lines. Click to find out.

SideSeeing Der Designmarkt

Designed Market.

Do you like original designs? Commercial but still not? Be sure to stop by at the market. And keep an eye out for RevDes.

Berlin is full of interesting designers (you can't throw a stone without hitting one). So when a city has an abundance of something it can be hard to find that what you are really looking for. But to help you out there are a number of markets that bring like-minded people together.

SideSeeing is one of them. So if you're not to hungover from the Berlin night scene then this is the perfect alternative to the flea markets. It has the same feeling to it, but not as much crap.

But the main reason to go there is RevDes, who are opening their market-season with a number of fresh designs. That's where I will be hanging out if I'm to hungover.

Spring?

The Bar will soon open.

The temperatur has gotten another up swing. Could it be that spring has begun? One sign of that must be that Bar 25 will soon open it's gates once again.

For anyone that has seen the movie Berlin Calling, Bar 25 must ring a bell. It's one of the special places to go clubbing. A place that offers something different. So for all the "special" people out there this must be good news. According to Welt Online the opening will take place on May the first.

But in the mean time The Best Stuff I See will be trying to find where things are happening with the motto Be The Weekend. I do think the quest will start in Suicide Circus and HBC but if that's where it will end remains to be seen. Maybe the newly moved in DJ collective has some pointers.

Just remember, there is only one weekend in the week.

Janine Perkuhn's Move!

Double Use.

Thinking green but mostly just straight up practical, designer Janine Perkuhn has designed a cardboard box that after a bit of folding turns in to a stool or a table or a...

One problem with all packaging is that it only gets used once. A moving box might get used a couple of times but in between moves they tend to end up in a storage of some kind. The project Move! solves that and gives the box a use even when it's not moving time. So simply that I can't help but to think -Why didn't I think of that?

And why stop at moving boxes? All packaging should have a secondary use. Think of how much energy we could save. And any company that makes a package that can be turned into something else will have their logo on the self and not in the trash. Just from the top of my head, the box for the new cell phone turns into a stand where you can recharge it. The box for the printer turns into a little table that hides the cables. The sky's the limit.

But first, where do I get one of the boxes from the Move! project? The idea in great but I don't know where to find it. I almost wonder if it's real. But even if it's not real then it's just a matter of time before someone steals the idea and capitalises on it.

The Story of Stuff

Stuff.

We all want stuff, we all need stuff, but do we know where the stuff comes from? Do we know how the stuff got made? Annie Leonard knows.

Here I mostly talk about stuff. More precisely the best stuff. But it's not very often that I talk about where the things come from. I think of it in the sense that if you only get the best stuff then you don't need to buy a lot. Quality over quantity. But that's not enough.

It's astonishing how much energy it takes to produce things. And how strange our system is built up. And it's also really hard to understand the way it all comes together. That's where Annie Leonard and the Story of Stuff project comes into the picture. They have made a number of amazing videos that can be seen on their web page and there is also a book that explains it all in detail.

Stan Smith Velcro Pack

Color Combo.

There is no need to buy four different sets of Stan Smiths anymore. Get one and simply change the heel. Like adicolor but somehow simpler.

The Stan Smith is the classic when it comes to low sneakers. It would not be crazy to say that most people have either owned a pair or thought about owning a pair of this sneaker. And once you're hooked, you start to compare all sneaks to the Stan Smith.

The only problem is that after a while you realize that maybe it would be nice with a different color. Sure the original color combos are all nice but you would need to get two, three different pairs to have some options. But now that problem is gone. By changing the color on the heel and combining that with different colored shoelaces the Stan just a lot more interesting.

A bit of Neukölln.

In waiting for spring.

Slowly, very slowly spring will come. And according to the rent prizes and certain magazines, Neukölln is the area of the city that will be taking off this spring. If that's true remains to be seen, but we can still take a look at what's happening in our Kiez.

Not long ago Neukölln was seen as a hard neighbourhood. An area that people lived in but nobody visited. That has changed. The north parts of the area is changing fast. More and more students are moving in all over NeuKölln. And more bars are popping up. But the one thing that hasn't really gotten to the neighbourhood is clubs. I hope it's just a question of time.

Yes there are a couple of clubs in Neukölln, Raum 18 being one of them. If I had the possibility I would head over this weekend because they have some things that looks like fun (especially on Saturday). But other than that, what the Neuköllner clubs has to offer are limited.

What Neukölln really has and is getting more of is bars. Ä is one of them over at Weserstraße 40. That street in general has a lot of bars. But a personal favorite of mine is the bar on the corner of Boddinstraße and Isarstraße. They don't have a sign so I never caught the name of the place but it's worth a visit.

Maybe I will see you around.

The Ring-Ge-Roo

Light in the bag.

The Ring-Ge-Roo illustrates very clearly that the possibilities are endless when you want to play with light.

Yesterday I talked to one of my roommates about how to decorate his room. He recently move into a bigger room with big white walls. The thing is that he doesn't like to have picture on his walls, so the idea of playing with light struck me. And the Ring-Ge-Roo from OWA Innovation Design Group does just that. And the structure is very simple, a LED light in a IV-pack. Simplicity that gives a special glowing light.

And what gives another dimension to this lamp is that you can change it yourself. Since the lamp is filled with water, changing the color can be done very fast. If you want a warm light source then fill it with red dyed water. And if you want a bit colder color, then simply put some green or blue in there.

Summer Shoes.

Vans just dropped a number of shoes in their new line. There is a bunch of 106 Vulcanized and Authentics in a variety of different colors.

As a old skate brand Vans are all about low sneaks with clean designs. And here is a typical example of that. I would categorize this as a pure skate sneak, but this it's more of a classic summer sneak. Come to think of it, it looks a lot like a sailing shoe. Either way, for the one sporting tight jeans this is a very safe bet for summer. And the prize tag is not that scary, always a plus.

Clubbing in Berlin.

The pressure is rising.

As the days gets longer the people get more energy. They are all hoping for spring and summer. But they can't wait that long.

Is it just me or did this little upturn in temperature start something? When moving around the city it seems as if people are a little more energetic. It's like the reminder that spring actually will come has triggered a series of inner events. Whatever it is, it might show it self tonight. I'm counting on it.

But where can one try to experience this oncoming change? Maybe in Ritter Butzke that have Runde#28 tonight and XXX tomorrow. Or it might be time to go to Soundsurfer in Mädcheninternat. I feel like doing something different and would like to head over to the Hoppetosse tonight. It's Blind Date Swingers Club NO.6 and making a mix tape-CD is always fun. And as for tomorrow, ArenaClub has something to offer but then again so does Awesome's one year anniversary in Villa. One will see.

Normally The Best Stuff I See will bring up clothes and things that are more in the street wear spectrum of what to wear. But for the ones that are not fans of sneakers and t-shirts here is something for you. A.P.C is a very french brand that is going for a very french look. A bit - I just got out of bed and threw something one but I still look fucking cool.

And yes it looks good, the only thing is that the clothes comes with a prize tag and it's not for everybody. You do need to have a certain body type to pull it off. The skinny kind to be precise. But if you fit the bill then you can go over to their store on Mulackstraße 35 here in Berlin or you just click here on www.apc.fr
